Funded Plan of Work:  Development of Sclerotinia Management Programs in Field Pea

Two research trials were established in 2004. The studies had three objectives.

  1. Compare efficacy of fungicides, Topsin M, Bayer experimental JAU 6476, and Endura, fungicides with three contrasting modes of action, applied
  2. at applications timings 10%, 40%, 100%, and 10 + 100% bloom growth stage on
  3. Integra and Eclipse variety field pea representing different flower duration, maturity, and vine length.

The initial year of studies were established at the Langdon and Carrington Research Extension Centers representing two distinct environments in East Central North Dakota. The experiments were arranged as 3 x 4 x 2 factorials in a randomized complete block design with four replicates.

Results: The region has experience a near record cold growing season. A freeze was received on August 20 in the region that caused severe damage to susceptible crops. Disease ratings have been compiled at Carrington but have not yet been analyzed. The Langdon site will complete disease evaluation this week. Harvest will still be a few weeks away. Disease levels ranged from moderate to severe at the Carrington site. Langdon had light to moderate disease levels and experienced bacterial growth in the lower canopy due to extremely humid environment. Both locations applied supplemental water to increase chance of Sclerotinia infection. The research centers used areas where previous Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infections had occurred on other crops.
